The Defensoría del Consumidor (DC), through its president Ricardo Salazar, announced that from 2019 to date the institution has managed to recover a total of US$112.77 million, benefiting 557,556 salvadorans. This achievement represents significant progress in the protection of consumer rights in the country.
Among the main causes of recovery are breach of contract and offer, with US$77.279 million in favor of 488,859 salvadorans. This is followed by recoveries for right of withdrawal and withdrawal of purchase, totaling US$10,592,860, benefiting 19,205 people, and improper charges, fees and commissions, with US$10,138,328 in favor of 28,846 consumers.
Other relevant cases include breach of warranty, with an amount of US$3,506,411 recovered for 4,422 beneficiaries, and abusive clauses, where US$3,283,051 were recovered for 3,351 affected individuals.
Of the total recovered, 95.8% is concentrated in five sectors: real estate (US$51,769,105), transportation (US$16,929,542), financial services (US$15,217,176), household appliances (US$10,856,122), and general services (US$6,041,337).
Ricardo Salazar emphasized that these results reflect the population’s confidence in the Defensoría del Consumidor. “We have improved the mechanisms for attending to complaints and advisory services, which demonstrates the evolution of the institution in attending to consumers”, he said.
This unprecedented achievement positions the Defensoría del Consumidor as a key player in the protection of the rights of Salvadorans, consolidating its role as a reliable and effective institution in the defense of the interests of consumers in the country.
