El Salvador and the Republic of Korea finalized a US$9 million non-reimbursable financial cooperation agreement to carry out the project “Korea Innovation Hub for Research and Development Collaboration,” an initiative that will be implemented at the Universidad de El Salvador (UES) over the next five years. The agreement is the result of joint efforts between Agencia de El Salvador para la Cooperación Internacional (ESCO) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), following more than two years of negotiations.
As part of the project, a state-of-the-art Innovation Center will be built and equipped in San Salvador. It will feature laboratories specializing in automation, prototyping, digital manufacturing, and quality control, among other technological capabilities aimed at strengthening research and development.
The initiative seeks to expand opportunities for students, researchers, and entrepreneurs by providing them with access to technological infrastructure and tools that contribute to the development of knowledge and skills in areas related to science, technology, and innovation.
Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill emphasized that this project is part of a vision aimed at strengthening the country’s competitiveness and creating opportunities for future generations. She also acknowledged the work carried out by ESCO and KOICA to finalize the technical and cooperation agreements that made this initiative possible.
In addition to academic and technological strengthening, the project aims to boost the technology startup ecosystem by supporting innovative ideas and digital ventures. The goal is to create conditions that allow salvadoran talent to develop solutions and take advantage of new opportunities in strategic sectors.
TheSouth Korean ambassador to El Salvador, Kwak Tae Yeol, noted that this cooperation will allow for the sharing of experiences related to economic development and social transformation, strengthening the partnership between the two countries and promoting the exchange of knowledge.
The initiative also represents an important step in strengthening bilateral relations between El Salvador and Korea, grounded in a shared vision of the role of education, research, and innovation as drivers of development.
Through this project, both nations reaffirm their commitment to advancing national capabilities in research and technology, promoting the generation of knowledge and the training of professionals prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
