Fines for commodity price increases rise to US$240,000

The Defensoría del Consumidor (DC) reports US$240,000 in penalties to companies for unjustified price increases in basic products, since March 2023 to date.

As reported by the President of the Defensoría del Consumidor, Ricardo Salazar, the fines for this offense reach up to 500 minimum wages.

These inspections are covered by the Consumer Protection Law, which qualifies abusive practices by suppliers as a serious infraction. According to the regulations, the fines for this offense reach up to 500 minimum wages, depending on what the Sanctioning Court rules on the case.

The official emphasized that this institution has broad competence to establish the abusive practice of unjustified price increases in basic or essential products for the population.

The head of the Defensoría explained that these inspections seek to verify that the measures implemented by the Government for the benefit of the population, such as the elimination of the payment of tariffs, are passed on to the consumers.
