Ministry of Labor to protect labor rights of professional soccer players

Written by Denis Muñoz

In view of the constant complaints received from a good number of professional soccer players, the minister of Labor and Social Welfare, Rolando Castro, informed that they will initiate verification and inspection visits in this sector.

The official clarified that as an institution they are not competent to intervene directly in the sports field and clarified that the function of the Ministry will be to verify the labor relationship between professional players and employers.

"As a result of a complaint received, we have decided to initiate inspections and request information from soccer clubs starting next week", Castro said.

The minister explained that, through complaints, lawsuits and anomalies exposed by the players, irregularities in payment and other aspects in labor matters were detected. "We urge the boards of directors of all sports clubs to collaborate by providing the documentation that will be requested”.

"The labor rights of professional athletes must also be respected, in our commitment to justice, we will watch tirelessly to ensure that they are fully complied with”, reiterated Rolando Castro.
