Written by Karla Gutiérrez

The general director of Internal Taxes, Marvin Sorto, said during a television interview that to date 65% of the total income tax returns expected for the 2023 period have been filed.

The official pointed out that this is a positive result, considering that El Salvador has managed to reduce the tax evasion gap by more than US$1.6 billion.

Sorto reminded salvadorans that they have until april 30 to file their income tax return, which can be done through the web page.

Among the modalities that the Ministry of Finance offers so that salvadorans can declare their income, are a total payment, partial payment, and payment in installments of up to six months.

The payment of taxes is one of the main sources of revenue for the State, so it is a benefit to the country when each company and individual complies with these types of obligations.

To date, the treasury has a surplus of US$551 million in relation to the 2023 budget, which is equivalent to 30.2%,

This is due to the rebound that El Salvador had in various economic sectors such as construction, tourism, electricity, professional services, leisure, financial, administration and support, communications and government services, areas that have injected capital, which translates into higher revenues for the country and benefits for the population.

Among other positive data highlighted by the Treasury are 211 cases of alleged tax evasion that have been presented to the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), which are equivalent to US$195 million.

In addition, the director exposed to some cases of the tax systems that make the comparison of what you have entered via imports, versus what you are declaring in your income tax return form, there is a significant difference and, in many occasions, of millions of dollars, that should not be so, since, this type of actions are considered against the law and are known as omitted income.
