Producers will be trained in the management of forage plants to feed livestock

Written by Evelyn Alas

The Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Óscar Domínguez, launched the Animal Nutrition Program trainings, which will provide new knowledge and tools to producers to improve livestock production in the country.

The official of the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) explained that these training sessions are part of a comprehensive program that includes the cultivation of forage plants for livestock feed, as they provide a high percentage of protein and are well adapted to the climatic conditions of the country.

This is a comprehensive livestock strategy, which includes many links that touch all possible points to provide quality to salvadorans, from nutrition to the reactivation of dairy plants.

Some of the grasses that will be cultivated are CT 115, CT169 and CUBA 22. According to Domínguez, the cultivation of these plants will allow producers to reduce production costs by up to 80% and ensure efficient and sustainable milk production.

These trainings will be nationwide. We know that many farmers use high-cost milk concentrates, more than US$150 per month and, depending on the livestock, it can be even more.

René Arévalo, a technician from MAG's General Directorate of Livestock, explained that "without good nutrition you have nothing, and we know that this is the fundamental basis of livestock farming. The sources of nutrition that will be provided, including pastures and shrubs, will reduce the cost of production.

This effort is linked to the project for the transfer of embryos in cattle, which is part of the integral program of the Mejoramiento Genético Ganadero (MEGA) that is being led by Minister Óscar Guardado.
