Eastern cattle ranchers receive seeds and forage plants to prevent effects of rains

Institutional authorities delivered feed, seeds and fodder plants to small cattle farmers in the east of the country to counteract the possible negative effects of the El Niño phenomenon.

The delivery, which consisted of more than 1,200 tons of sugarcane bagasse, thousands of fodder plants and hundreds of quintals of corn to produce hydroponic green fodder, was in charge of the Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Óscar Domínguez and the Director of Livestock, René Arévalo.

Among the thousands of forage plants distributed to small livestock farmers are: Cratylia argentea, which has the goodness to sprout even in dry season and also has more than 21% of the protein needed by livestock. They also included prickly pear cactus, so that small farmers can cultivate their plots and produce nutritious feed for their animals.

MAG technicians will train small livestock farmers in the hydroponic cultivation of corn fodder plants, with which they will be able to obtain feed for their cattle in only 12 days.

"Our ideals are to support the livestock sector and today especially the eastern sector. Technical assistance is fundamental for you. The corn we are giving you today is highly productive and in 12 days you will have results to feed your cattle", said the deputy head of the industry.

The Director General of Livestock of MAG explained that the Morazán Livestock Center will grow forage grass and cactus, with the aim that "producers can take them to their plots and develop their own productions".

Naún Ortez, a small livestock farmer from the Acopalim de R.L. cooperative, thanked the Central Government, "because we have never before seen this type of technical assistance to produce our forage grass. This motivates us to continue with production in this eastern zone", he said.
