Written by Evelyn Alas

Thanks to the implementation of good practices and innovations that contribute to the care of the environment and combat climate change, CMI Alimentos, a group of Corporación Multi Inversiones (CMI), was recognized for avoiding 256,241 tons of greenhouse gases during the year 2022 in Central America.

This milestone represents an increase of 151% with respect to the numbers achieved in 2021, which is the result of innovation and research carried out in conjunction with institutions and universities and the existence of new developments to generate more efficient solutions to improve nutrition in the balanced feed consumed by poultry and thus reduce emissions into the environment.

These important figures show that, in El Salvador alone, 72,680 tons of CO2 were avoided.

This recognition was granted by the global company dsm-firmenich, dedicated to developing nutritional solutions and committed to economic development based on environmental and social responsibility.

The poultry operations and animal feed produced by CMI Alimentos were the protagonists of this milestone, which is equivalent to planting 4.2 million trees for 10 years.

In addition, CMI Alimentos has two certified carbon neutral plants, one of them in El Salvador; more than 11 thousand solar panels in its operations and five energy efficiency certifications. Thanks to this, in the last eight years, Alimentos operations have avoided a total of 366 thousand tons of CO2 throughout the region.

Inspired by the purpose "We feed your world to fill it with well-being", CMI Alimentos receives this award with great pride, as it confirms that its sustainability strategy, integrated into the business, is yielding positive results. "This is a manifestation of our commitment to food security in the countries where we operate and to promote sustainable development with an impact on people, families and communities", said Giancarlo Loli, commercial director of Feed Solutions CMI Alimentos.

The innovative solutions provided by dsmfirmenich's animal health and nutrition business and implemented by CMI, have improved the digestive processes of animals and the use of nutrients to achieve greater efficiency in feed and poultry farms in Costa Rica and in other countries where it has this type of operation, such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

By optimizing these processes, CMI contributes to combating climate change and strengthening food security, providing animal protein in a sustainable, safe and nutritious way, aligned with best practices in the food industry.

Regarding dsm-firmenich, Andrés Collazo, the company's North Latam director, explained: "We are strategic allies for companies that are committed to our planet and future generations, promoting economic development with environmental and social responsibility. This recognition celebrates CMI for its work and commitment to feeding the world in a sustainable and responsible way".

Quirós raised awareness of the commitment that companies must make to reduce their carbon footprint.

This meeting brought together the regional poultry community to promote the move towards a renewed poultry farming, defined by the maximization of production efficiency, the implementation of best practices in farms, biosecurity and the use of new technologies in this field.
