According to an analysis by the Secretaría Ejecutiva del Consejo Monetario Centroamericano (Secmca) El Salvador ranks second among countries in generating energy from renewable sources within its energy matrix in Central America and the Dominican Republic.

Seeking to contribute to environmental sustainability, the Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL) reported progress in the process to build the power generation plant from waste in San Salvador, which will have an installed capacity of 5.2 megawatts, of which 2.85 megawatts will be through biogas; 1.9 megawatts with photovoltaic and 0.45 MW with the small hydroelectric plant, which is expected to produce electricity for about 21,000 families.
