Secmca points out that El Salvador is the second country to generate energy from renewable sources

Written by Karla Gutiérrez

According to an analysis by the Secretaría Ejecutiva del Consejo Monetario Centroamericano (Secmca) El Salvador ranks second among countries in generating energy from renewable sources within its energy matrix in Central America and the Dominican Republic.

In El Salvador, between the years 2000-2021, on average, 66% of energy generation came from renewable sources; producing some 3.6 terawatt-hours.

Hydroelectric energy represented an average of 30% of the country's energy matrix; being the most used renewable source.

Energy generated by fossil sources represented an average of 34%, with oil being the only fossil source used in the country. Specifically, in 2021, 80% of energy generation came from renewable sources.

Statistics show that El Salvador is only surpassed by Costa Rica, which, up to 2021, produced 99% of its energy from renewable sources.

Guatemala maintained 66% of its matrix, Honduras 52%, while Nicaragua reached 55% and the Dominican Republic 17% and Costa Rica produced 99% of its energy from renewable sources.

The Dirección de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas (DEHM) of El Salvador shared that by 2023 the State's electricity generators generated 209.03 GWh of energy in the country, benefiting more than 2 million salvadorans.

This amount of energy came from four power generating companies which are:

La Geo generated 106.97 GWh.

CEL and CECSA

The Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL) and Compañía Eléctrica Cucumacayán (CECSA), generate energy for El Salvador through hydroelectric power plants, which are facilities that use hydraulic energy for power generation.

CECSA generated 3.16 GWh.

CEL generated 96.66 GWh.

INE

Inversiones Energéticas (INE) generates energy through the Talnique Power Plant which, through nine motor-generators, converts combustion into energy.

INE generated 2.34 GWh.

Energy plays a very important role in the development of a country, without it there would be no convenient lighting, no radio and television communications, no telephone services, and people would have to do without electrical appliances that have become an integral part of homes.
