United Airlines celebrates 35 years of service between the United States and El Salvador, commemorating the anniversary of its first direct flight from San Salvador to the United States on June 1, 1989. Since then, the airline has been instrumental in maintaining connectivity between the two countries, facilitating the development of trade, tourism and cultural exchanges in the region.
United has increased its capacity to El Salvador by approximately 40% in 2024 compared to 2023, marking the highest year-over-year growth to the Central American country compared to other airlines. Since launching its first direct flight, United has been the only U.S. airline to increase the number of departures to El Salvador year-over-year, serving more than 7.5 million passengers on flights between the two countries.
“As the leading U.S. airline between the United States and Central America, we are proud to celebrate our growth and commitment to El Salvador”, said Frederick Thome, Director of Sales for Central America and the Andean Region for United Airlines. “We look forward to continuing to serve the vibrant salvadoran community by connecting passengers and families to the moments that matter most”.
Currently, United offers the largest seat capacity and most nonstop flights from four of its U.S. hubs – Houston (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), New York/Newark (EWR) and Washington, D.C. (IAD, with seasonal service) – providing customers with options and reducing nonstop travel times.
To date, United has transported more than 29,000 tons of cargo between El Salvador and the U.S., including handling a variety of products such as loroco (edible flower), tamales, fresh beans, dairy products, sweet bread and pupusas.
The airline has more than 70 employees in El Salvador in various functions, such as airport operations, including customer service representatives; our in-city ticketing office located in San Salvador; sales; and finance.
