Holcim continues to innovate to offer agile and sustainable solutions for the construction sector

Written by Evelyn Alas

Reinforcing its leadership in innovative and sustainable solutions for construction, Holcim presents to its customers the latest acquisition of high-tech machinery that allows more accurate and efficient dosing of the amount of cement per mt2 required for soil stabilization in the construction or paving of a street, road or highway, including single-layer pavements.

The "Spreader", acquired by Holcim El Salvador with an investment of more than US$250,000, is a soil cement spreader that can be programmed through a screen in its cabin to comply with the technical specification required according to the design, which is known as the structural package of the pavement.

"What we do through the  “spreader” ́ is to enable the contractor to work the earthwork process and when it is time to distribute the cement, this is not done in a traditional way, but in a controlled and automated way in which it is determined how much cement spreading rate is required per mt2, it is programmed and the machine distributes it, reducing times significantly", explained Fernando Olivares, Infrastructure Coordinator of Holcim El Salvador.

In addition to optimizing time and materials, the spreader also makes an important environmental contribution by reducing waste generated by cement packaging, which the project developer must dispose of in landfills or in some cases accumulates on roadsides or dumps.

In addition, as part of its environmental commitment, Holcim uses low-CO2 cements in the soil stabilization process, specifically Multibase cement specially designed for this purpose and Strong Portland Cement type GU for general use, both part of Holcim's ECOPlanet range of cements, which promote sustainable construction.

The first demonstration of the use of "Spreader" in public works took place last monday, january 23, in the presence of the Minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodriguez, who supervised the progress in the construction of the overpass in San Juan Opico.

"We are using new technology, through Holcim, to stabilize soils. This saves time and reduces waste, such as the bags of cement that were previously placed", said the official during the demonstration of this machinery.

Features of the spreader

This mechanical cement spreader is self-propelled and has a capacity of 25 tons of cement, which allows:

  • A placement width of 2.4 meters of spreading.
  • Optimize time by reducing the work from 1 hour to 5 minutes.

With this investment, Holcim El Salvador reinforces its leadership in innovative and sustainable solutions for construction, providing its customers with a comprehensive service that allows them to save time and resources and meet the goal of building more with less.
