Family remittances sent to El Salvador registered significant growth during may 2016, according to preliminary figures from the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR).The data shows that the country received $923.05 million in may, representing an increase of $71.92 million compared to april, when the flow reached $851.13 million.
This monthly increase is equivalent to 8.45%, reflecting a recovery in remittance inflows from one month to the next. This positive trend indicates that more funds were sent by salvadorans residing abroad during may, which constitute an important source of income for thousands of households in the country.
In a month-over-month comparison, the increase of more than $70 million marks one of the largest gains recorded between two consecutive months in 2026. This growth contributes to strengthening the flow of foreign currency into the salvadoran economy and directly benefits the consumption of families that depend on these resources.

Comparing the results with the same period of the previous year, the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR) reports that may 2026 also surpassed may 2025. While family remittances totaled $899.08 million in may of last year, they reached $923.05 million in may of this year, representing an increase of $23.97 million, equivalent to a year-over-year growth of 2.67%.
Although the annual increase was more moderate than that recorded between april and may of this year, the figures show that the flow of remittances continues to be higher than that observed twelve months ago, maintaining a positive trend.

According to the Banco Central de Reserva document, the figures correspond to preliminary information prepared using the Balance of Payments methodology, with data provided by banks, remittance companies, federations, telephone companies, and digital wallet providers.
The data published by the BCR confirms that may ended with higher remittance inflows compared to both the previous month and the same month in 2015, consolidating a monthly growth of 8.45% and a year-on-year increase of 2.67%.
