Strong increases in prices of basic food basket items

In a survey conducted by Dinero.com.sv, traders say that the prices of several products of the basic food basket have increased in the last months, such as potatoes, tomatoes, onions, green chili, eggs, basic grains and meats.

Lucía Orellana, a store owner, reports that the price of eggs has gone up several cents, for example, a carton used to cost US$39 and now it is going up to US$51.

Likewise, a carton costs US$4.25, 6 eggs at US$1.00 and US$0.25 per unit.

As for potatoes, before you could get two pounds for US$1.00 and now it is US$0.75 per pound.

She used to sell onions at US$0.25 and now, due to price increases, she has to sell them at US$0.35 or three units for US$1.00.

Orellana assures that a few months ago she could sell tomatoes to her clients at 6 units for US$1.00 and now she has to sell them at 4 for the same amount of money, and she also sells them at US$0.25 per unit.

The pound of plain rice used to be sold at US$0.45 and now it is US$0.75 per pound and parboiled rice at US$0.85 per pound.

The Minister of Economy, María Luisa Hayem, assures that they have monitored the prices of the basic food basket and it has been detected that the price of meats has increased up to 11.9%, from december 2020 to may 2022.

MINEC, the Ministerio de Hacienda and Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG), presented a piece of correspondence to the Legislative Assembly to suspend, until march 31, 2023, the import tariff on beef.
