The Economy Committee issued a favorable opinion to extend until march 31, 2026 the Special Transitory Law to Combat Inflation of Basic Prices, with the purpose of allowing salvadorans to continue obtaining at a good cost the products of the basic food basket.

Ricardo Salazar, president of the Defensoría del consumidor, after the deployment of inspections in different commercial points of the country, informed that since last week high prices have been found due to speculation in some fruits and vegetables. Therefore, an investigation process has been activated against suppliers engaged in the import, production and marketing of tomatoes, carrots, beets and cucumbers.

The price of the basic food basket in El Salvador has not varied much in this year that is about to end, since in the urban area of the country prices have remained between US$245 and US$257 throughout the year, while in the rural area prices have varied between US$185 and US$193.

The Director of the Centro de Defensa para el Consumidor (CDC), Danilo Perez, in a radio interview provided data on the Basic Food Basket and nutritional situation in the country, in which they have recorded that the year 2021 was the last most stable price of the urban and rural Basic Food Basket, after that period everything has gone up.

In a survey conducted by Dinero.com.sv, traders say that the prices of several products of the basic food basket have increased in the last months, such as potatoes, tomatoes, onions, green chili, eggs, basic grains and meats.
