Norberto Romero, president of the Confederación Salvadoreña Pesca Acuícola Agropecuaria de Pequeña Escala (CONFEPESCA), informed that fishing inputs have increased between 25% and 35%.

The spokesman added that products are dropping in price, which is why it is important to seek to create markets in the country to reach more consumers in retail purchases.

Despite not having updated data, CONFEPESCA indicated that fishing production has increased in recent years as the sector went from producing 5 million 301 thousand 875 kilograms of seafood in 2015 to 12 million 725 thousand 093 kilograms for 2018.

In addition, he said that in El Salvador there are 229 fishing communities in the country and 147 landing points. Also, the President of CONFEPESCA pointed out that the lack of opportunities in banking to grant "good credits" still persists in the country.

He explained that the General Law for the Management and Promotion of Fisheries and Aquaculture allows the granting of licenses as collateral, but that "unfortunately" commercial banks "do not want collateral" because fishing is considered an "insecure" job.
