Fishermen denounce that they do not receive FOVIAL tax exemption benefit

Written by Evelyn Alas

Yesterday fishermen made a complaint to the Defensoría del Consumidor, indicating that they are not receiving the benefit of not being charged Fondo de Conservación Vial (Fovial).

That is why the interim Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Enrique Parada, together with the president of the Defensoría del Consumidor, Ricardo Salazar, went to different gas stations located in the port of La Libertad, to verify that this tax is not being charged.

Salazar explained that there is US$0.20 less per gallon of fuel for the fishing sector by not charging the Fovial, which is in addition to the other benefits implemented by the Central Government to keep fuel prices low.

He affirmed that, at the time of purchase, the fisherman must present his ID card and demand not to be charged the Fovial, which is US$0.20 per gallon less, which is in addition to the more than US$0.80 per gallon that the Government is subsidizing for two months.

The head of the MAG explained that the Ministry is watching to verify that these measures have the impact for which they were created, and for this reason they are working hand in hand with the Defensoría del Consumidor.

Likewise, the Defensoría del Consumidor has carried out nationwide inspections at gas stations to ensure that the population does not pay more than it should for a gallon of gasoline and, in addition, citizen complaints are being addressed, which is why they have moved to the Port of La Libertad.

Since february of this year, the fishing sector has benefited from the elimination of the Fovial tax, an initiative implemented by President Bukele to protect the economy of this sector of the population.
