How much do cyberattacks increase during the summer?

Written by Evelyn Alas

During the summer, cyber-attacks increase by around 30%, taking advantage of the relaxation of security measures and the increase in online activity. Cybercriminals use various methods, such as phishing and identity theft, focusing especially on scams related to tourist accommodations.

Francisco Valencia, CEO of Secure&IT, said: "The most common is the creation of ads or websites for tourist accommodations that do not exist and the publication of ads stolen from legitimate websites that they do not own. The cybercriminals create a fake web page, where they advertise the accommodations, with the aim of getting the victim to access, enter their personal and bank details and even make an advance payment for the reservation. This can be done with fake ads that are published in legitimate pages (it is less common because these pages usually have controls to prevent this from happening) and with the creation of fraudulent websites that are created exclusively for this purpose".

To avoid this, it is essential to verify the authenticity of the website and look for reviews or testimonials from other users before making any reservation. It is also advisable to "carefully review the legal notice and privacy policies, paying attention to possible "extras" hidden in the contract," according to the expert.

To avoid becoming a victim of these attacks, it is recommended to investigate and verify the authenticity of websites, pay attention to warning signs such as excessively low prices, use secure payment methods, secure connections, keep devices updated, use secure and unique passwords, review privacy policies and terms of purchase, and report any suspected scams to the appropriate authorities.
