The Banco Central de Reserva de El Salvador (BCR) reported, through the preliminary results of the Fifth Agricultural Census 2025, that the national poultry industry has reached an inventory of over 29.5 million birds, consolidating its position as one of the most important activities in the agricultural sector. Of all poultry producers, 32.1% are dedicated exclusively to raising broiler chickens, 28.1% to egg production for consumption, while 27.7% combine more than one production purpose, demonstrating a high level of diversification within the sector.
According to the BCR, this level of production positions poultry farming as a key pillar of food security, guaranteeing a constant supply of animal protein for the domestic market. The diversification of production systems allows producers to respond more efficiently to demand and reduce their vulnerability to price and cost fluctuations.

The census also highlights that direct sales to the end consumer are the main marketing channel, which strengthens local markets, reduces intermediaries, and improves producers’ income. This model facilitates access to fresh products for the population and helps to boost the rural economy.
According to the BCR, having up-to-date statistical information will allow for the development of public policies focused on poultry health, productivity, and sustainability, in order to ensure the orderly growth of one of the most dynamic sectors of salvadoran agriculture.
