As part of its 21st anniversary, the Defensoría del Consumidor launched the information portal “Guía tu récord crediticio”, this tuesday. This interactive digital platform was created to help consumers understand their rights and know how to proceed in situations related to their credit history.
The tool compiles information on the legislation that regulates credit reporting services and explains in a simple way the mechanisms available to consult, verify, correct, and update registered data. The agency’s president, Ricardo Salazar, emphasized that the initiative aims to empower consumers and facilitate their access to information that can be key to maintaining an accurate credit history.
The portal features eight information sections where users can learn about their rights, the duties of credit reporting agencies, and the obligations of financial institutions. It also provides guidance on how to make inquiries and file complaints or reports when consumers believe their rights have been violated.

Salazar explained that knowing and keeping your credit history up to date is important because this information can be considered when accessing financing, postpaid services, financial products, or credit purchases. Therefore, the platform aims to ensure users know how to protect their data and what to do when they find incorrect information.
As part of its oversight duties, the Defensoría del Consumidor conducts unannounced quarterly inspections of credit reporting agencies. These verifications allow them to identify potential non-compliance related to the management and updating of consumers’ credit information.
Among the findings highlighted by the agency is the existence of more than 778,900 delinquent loans or credit references that had already been paid off, but whose records were not updated within the legal timeframe of three business days. However, the Defensoría del Consumidor reported that this type of non-compliance has decreased in recent years.

The verifications recorded 115,982 credit references with defaults in 2022, compared to 41,573 in 2025, representing a reduction of nearly 66%. According to the institution, this trend reflects an improvement in compliance with obligations related to updating consumer information.
The “Guía tu récord crediticio”, portal is now available at guiaturecordcrediticio.defensoria.gob.sv and aims to become a reference tool for salvadorans to access, protect, correct, and update their credit information, thus strengthening their exercise of their rights as consumers.
