The Ministerio de Economía (MINEC) through the Directorate of Hydrocarbons and Mines, activated a plan to verify the quality, quantity and prices of fuels at gas stations in the country, while the Defensoría del Consumidor (DC) will probe prices of food products and bottled water in convenience stores of these service stations nationwide.

The inspection deployment in these establishments, seeks to guarantee the quality of fuels and that consumers receive the amounts they pay for, as well as to safeguard the purchasing power of salvadorans before the increase in the minimum wage that will be effective as of august 1st.

The articulation of joint inspections aims to monitor prices and avoid abuses to the detriment of consumers, said the authorities of both institutions that make up the Sistema Nacional de Protección al Consumidor (SNPC). These operations have started in the service stations on the route to the Port of La Libertad.

The inspection teams of the Hydrocarbons and Mines Directorate, according to their competences, will verify that the gallons of fuel are in accordance with the amount dispensed and paid by the consumers; as well as verifying the quality of the same.

The Defensoría del Consumidor, which will verify the prices of food products and basic necessities in convenience stores, reiterates that, according to the Consumer Protection Law, all suppliers are obliged to display the prices of products and services, and that the sale at a price higher than that offered constitutes a serious infringement of the law, punishable by a fine of up to 200 urban monthly minimum wages in the industry.

Consumers have at their disposal the telephone number 910 and WhatsApp 7860-9704, of the Defensoría del Consumidor, to report price abuses.
