Contributing to create a cleaner, more sustainable world and reinforcing its commitment to the circular economy, Holcim El Salvador, through its subsidiary brand Geocycle, inaugurated the first station for the separation of municipal solid waste in the country.

This plant will classify daily around 400 tons of garbage generated in 16 municipalities that deliver their waste to the ASEMUSA landfill, including Santa Ana, Chalchuapa, Metapán, El Congo, San Sebastián Salitrillo, El Porvenir, Masahuat, Texistepeque, Santiago de la Frontera, San Antonio Pajonal, Candelaria de la Frontera and Santa Rosa Guachipilin, which are the municipalities associated with ASEMUSA; plus the municipalities of El Congo, El Refugio, Ciudad Arce and Nueva Concepción de Chalatenango.

With the operation of this first municipal waste separation station we are advancing in our commitment to sustainability by taking advantage of the energy and mineral value of waste in our cement production and contributing to the generation of a cleaner environment", said Rodrigo Gallardo, CEO of Holcim El Salvador, who also highlighted the progress of this company to become a company with zero net emissions (Net Zero) worldwide, being El Salvador an increasingly active country in this effort.

Geocycle began operations in El Salvador 15 years ago; since then it has treated more than 217 thousand tons of solid and liquid waste from the pharmaceutical, automotive, chemical, textile, manufacturing, plastics, petroleum, paper, among others, to which is now added municipal waste, preventing it from being deposited in landfills, dumps, rivers and oceans.

The installation and start-up of this waste separation plant in this western department of the country has been possible thanks to the joint work of Geocycle and Holcim El Salvador with the municipalities, through the Asociación Ecológica de los Municipios de Santa Ana (ASEMUSA)which for years have been seeking a solution for the final disposal of solid waste in their localities. The investment, which exceeds US$1 million, will extend the useful life of the area's sanitary landfill and significantly reduce the environmental impact by avoiding CO emissions.

"We are providing a comprehensive solution to the waste problem. This plant will receive waste before it reaches the landfill to separate plastics, packaging and other types of materials that can be used to generate energy", said Jorge Peña, Geocycle's general manager. "We are recycling what cannot be recycled", he said.
