The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador approved, with 60 votes in favor during its 113th plenary session, the ratification of the Tratado de Riad Derecho de los Diseños (DLT), an international instrument promoted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
With this decision, the country remains among the 29 states that are party to this international agreement, aimed at simplifying and harmonizing industrial design registration procedures globally.
The treaty will allow salvadoran designers to protect their creations in multiple countries through a simpler and more uniform system, reducing the complexity of procedures before different national intellectual property offices.

However, the agreement does not automatically grant or recognize industrial property rights, as these continue to be granted exclusively by each national office, in accordance with its domestic legislation.
The ratification of the DLT seeks to strengthen the national intellectual property system by guaranteeing salvadoran users procedural simplification standards equivalent to those applied in more developed countries in this area.
Furthermore, the country will have a harmonized procedural framework for the main categories of industrial property: invention patents, design patents, and trademarks.

Among the key benefits are the potential increase in attracting investment and improving competitiveness, as well as positioning El Salvador internationally as a more attractive destination for investment in creative and manufacturing industries.
According to the approved legislation, the measure also reinforces the confidence of foreign investors by aligning design patent registrations with international standards, strengthening the country’s image as a state committed to the multilateral system for the protection of intellectual property.
