As part of the 2024 End of Year Plan, the Government of El Salvador implemented anti-doping controls nationwide, with the aim of guaranteeing road safety. The general director of Land Transportation, Ismael Flores, supervised one of these controls on Constitución Boulevard, in San Salvador, and highlighted the application of the recent reforms to the Land Transportation, Traffic and Road Safety Law as a key factor in reducing accidents.
So far in the End of Year Plan, a 10% decrease in road accidents has been reported, with 156 incidents. In addition, injuries have decreased by 36% and fatalities by 50%, according to the director of the Viceministerio de Transporte (VMT). This effort includes carrying out 1,505 anti-doping tests within the framework of the operation, as part of the strategies to protect Salvadorans during the holiday season.
Flores highlighted that, from january 1 to date, anti-doping tests have tripled compared to 2023, reaching a total of 75,463 tests carried out. This increase reflects the government’s commitment to strengthen road safety and prevent accidents related to the consumption of alcohol and other substances among drivers.
The reforms to the Traffic Regulations have also played a fundamental role, as traffic violations have been reclassified and the amounts of fines increased. These modifications seek to establish a zero tolerance policy towards dangerous drivers. The operations include the verification of documentation and safety equipment on vehicles.
The official stressed that the population has responded positively to these reforms, thanks to information campaigns organized by the Ministry of Public Works and the VMT. Through posters and messages at traffic controls, the authorities have worked to socialize the new regulations and encourage responsible driving.
The Government reaffirms its commitment to the well-being of Salvadoran families, prioritizing safety on streets and highways. These actions, focused on reducing traffic accidents, represent a comprehensive effort to protect lives during the end-of-year festivities.
