Renewal of DUI abroad is extended to 90 days prior to the electoral process: RNPN

Written by Evelyn Alas

The Central Government continues to employ strategies to improve and bring the services of different institutions closer to the population, as well as to salvadorans living abroad. One of these is the issuance, replacement and renewal of the Documento Único de Identidad (DUI).

The head of the Registro Nacional de Personas Naturales (RNPN) Fernando Velazco, informed that the diaspora can still renew their Documento Único de Identidad (DUI) to be part of the electoral registry of the next general commissions of 2024.

''There is a difference between the closing of the registration of the electoral registry at national level and the closing that the salvadoran brothers and sisters abroad will have, they are two different dates. In the country it was last august 7, but abroad it changes'', explained Velasco.

The official affirmed that the interested parties have a period of 90 days prior to the electoral date, due to the approval of a transitory decree that extended the deadlines for the closing of the registry and that they may update their domicile address.

The closing date will be november 5, 2023, he said. Velasco urged the population living abroad to go to the 18 DUICentros located in the United States, the three in Europe, one in Mexico and another one in Canada.

In the production of the DUI abroad, this year to date, we have 23,896 new documents'', he said. Regarding the registration, in El Salvador, to participate in next year's elections, the president of the RNPN confirmed that a total of 5,387,808 DUI's were closed within the Registro Electoral Nacional, there are 542,548 expired and 4,845,260 are in force.

The Central Government administration through its institutions will continue working to enforce the rights of the population living in El Salvador and the diaspora around the world.
