Salvadorans abroad may request a birth certificate for free

Written by Miguel Crespin

With the objective of facilitating the political participation of salvadorans abroad, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly approved, with 65 votes, a transitory provision of 60 days for salvadorans to be able to request a free birth certificate, which is necessary to apply for the Documento Único de Identidad (DUI).

"This document opens the doors for us to be able to obtain our rights and among those is the right to vote from anywhere in the world. We are taking into account the opinions of the diaspora and we have responsibly addressed all their rights", commented Congressman Raúl Chamagua, in the 127th plenary session.

The benefit that will be obtained with the modification to the regulation is to exonerate the payment of US$35 for the service of Certification of Birth Certificates Abroad, regulated in the Organic Law of the National Registry of Natural Persons (RNPN).

In the case of DUI renewal, only the presentation of the birth certificate will be required, if there is no file of this in the citizen's file held by the Registro Natural de las Personas Naturales (RNPN).

To date, this institution has a registry of 870,058 salvadorans abroad who would be eligible to vote in 2024. However, there is a considerable number of compatriots who do not have their DUI.

The electoral registry of salvadorans abroad will close on november 5 of this year, so this provision will allow distant brothers and sisters who have not yet processed their document to do so in order to participate in the elections of 2024.
