The Banco Central de Reserva (BCR) of El Salvador announced that the one-cent coin will remain legal tender, despite the United States officially ceasing its production after more than two centuries in circulation.
According to the statement, the one-cent coin had been in circulation for 232 years in the United States, but its production became unsustainable because manufacturing each coin cost almost four times its face value. Therefore, the U.S. Mint decided to end its production.

The BCR emphasized that this measure does not affect the validity of the centavo in El Salvador, where it will continue to be accepted as a means of payment in all transactions. The institution called on the public to remain calm and continue using the currency normally, reminding them that the suspension of its production does not eliminate its value.
With this clarification, the BCR seeks to avoid confusion among salvadorans and guarantee stability in cash management within the national financial system.
