More than 440,000 people have visited San Salvador’s Historic Center as of april 2, as part of the 2026 Holy Week celebrations, according to official data from the Autoridad del Centro Histórico de San Salvador. This figure positions the area as one of the main gathering spots during the holiday period and brings it closer to the goal of 500,000 visitors projected by the authorities.
The institution’s director, Adriana Larín, confirmed that the flow of people has been steady in recent days, driven by a varied schedule of religious, cultural, and recreational activities. “We know we’re going to exceed the goal of half a million visitors”, she said on the morning of Good Friday.
The Historic Center of San Salvador has established itself as the epicenter of religious activities in the capital. Among its main attractions is the traditional creation of carpets, especially the one located on Rubén Darío Street, between Plaza Libertad and Plaza Simón Bolívar, which has captured the attention of thousands of domestic and international visitors.

In anticipation of the large crowds expected on Good Friday (considered the busiest day of Holy Week), authorities have stepped up security and emergency response measures. Luis Alonso Amaya, director of Civil Protection in El Salvador, announced that a command post will be set up in Gerardo Barrios Square to coordinate the response to any emergency.
Among the preventive measures, families are advised to attach a phone number to their children’s clothing to facilitate their location in case they get lost, a practice that, according to authorities, has yielded positive results in previous years.

The operation is part of the deployment of the Sistema Nacional de Protección Civil, which brings together various first-response institutions with the aim of ensuring the safety, order, and timely assistance of attendees.
Authorities anticipate that, with the expected influx of visitors on Good Friday and throughout the rest of the holiday period, the Historic Center will exceed half a million visitors, cementing its status as one of the most popular and iconic destinations for Holy Week in El Salvador.
