The country continues to strengthen its border connectivity with the opening of a new immigration checkpoint in the El Coco canton, located in the Chalchuapa district, which connects directly to the municipality of Jerez in Guatemala.
This new border crossing began operations on friday, march 13, 2026, allowing for the regulated movement of people between the two nations under a formal immigration control system.
Security personnel, including immigration officers and border patrol agents, are stationed at the site and are responsible for carrying out the necessary procedures for entry into and exit from the country. Services are available to both salvadoran citizens and foreign nationals traveling through the area.

The crossing is open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., during which time travelers can complete their immigration procedures in an orderly, efficient, and secure manner.
The opening of this crossing represents a significant step forward in border control, as this area previously lacked an official presence to regulate the flow of people. With this measure, authorities aim not only to improve security but also to facilitate legal transit between El Salvador and Guatemala.

Furthermore, this development is particularly significant in the context of the Holy Week season, a period during which the movement of people increases considerably. The new crossing thus becomes an additional option that helps relieve congestion at other points and ensures a more organized flow of traffic.
With this initiative, El Salvador expands its immigration control options, strengthens border security, and promotes better regional connectivity, benefiting both travelers and nearby communities.
