Defensoría del Consumidor (DC) assisted 3,006 salvadorans during the Plan Vacación «Defensoría Agostina 2026», held between july 30 and august 6. Of all the inquiries and cases received, financial services accounted for the largest number of cases, with 1,251, representing 42% of the total.
The cases were primarily related to situations directly impacting consumers’ finances. Among the most frequent reasons for seeking assistance were improper charges, fees, and commissions, which represented 36% of the cases; followed by breach of contract or offer, at 18%; over-indebtedness problems related to payment plans, at 12%; and abusive collection practices, including defamatory or slanderous actions, at 7%.

Together, these four issues accounted for 73% of the complaints handled by the Defensoría del Consumidor during the holiday period. The data reflects that a significant portion of consumer inquiries were related to the handling of financial products and services and charges they considered improper.
After financial services, the sectors with the most complaints were telecommunications, with 493 cases (16%); appliances, furniture, and household goods, with 235 cases (8%); and other services, with 182 cases (6%).

In addition to receiving complaints and providing advice, the Defensoría del Consumidor conducted 549 inspections of commercial establishments during the period. 69.95% of the inspections revealed no violations, while 30.05% detected potential infractions, including expired products, lack of information on complaint procedures, labeling issues, and practices related to e-commerce.
The institution also destroyed 387 expired products, mainly found in restaurants, and inspected 165 scales used in businesses. Of these, 119 met the requirements, while 46 presented non-compliance issues that will be referred to the Sanctions Tribunal.
