Storm Pilar could affect agricultural production

Storm Pilar is approaching El Salvador, which has generated that authorities and farmers' organizations in the country are alert for the losses that may be generated in the agricultural sector in different departments of El Salvador.

The Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería, for its part, has provided shelters for animal owners to take them to a safe place and prevent them from suffering the consequences of the constant rainfall that is being recorded in the country.

Other recommendations made by the authorities in charge of agriculture in the country have been:

1: Reduce plowing on the land to avoid soil erosion.

2: Avoid the accumulation of garbage, vegetation and other objects that impede the natural circulation of water.

3: Maintain good drainage on flat land.

Luis Treminio, president of the Cámara Salvadoreña de Pequeños y Medianos Productores Agropecuarios (CAMPO), does not yet have data on the damage that could be generated to current crops, due to the constant rainfall that is being generated in the country.

According to Treminio, the coastal area of El Salvador could be the most affected. The head of CAMPO expects to meet in the coming hours with other members of the association in order to have adequate data on how much damage could be caused by the storm Pilar to the country in its agricultural sector.

One of the scenarios that is expected not to be repeated could be that of storm Julia, which in 2022 affected 10,292 manzanas of crops, affecting the production of corn, rice, coffee, vegetables and fruits, and according to a report of the United Nations, 100,000 quintals of basic grains were at risk.
