Written by Karla Gutiérrez

During a television interview, Ricardo Salazar, President of the Defensoría del Consumidor, stated that after the inspections carried out in different establishments to verify the prices of essential products of the basic food basket, it was possible to see a decrease in the costs of some of the food products.

Among them are corn, which was around US$30 per quintal, today can be found in the market between US$22 and US$23 per quintal; the same in the case of beans, which at some point could be over US$100 per quintal and today is between US$88 and US$92 per quintal, depending on the type of bean, explained the official.

In the case of inspections carried out on importers and traders of agricultural inputs, there is a fairly positive supply of fertilizer imports, with substantial decreases of between 20% and 30% in some cases.

"This is a work in which we are interested in having a close reading of what is happening in the different markets”, said Salazar, who noted that the inspections included visits to storage facilities in places like the port of Acajutla, which have a capacity to store up to 150,000 metric tons of products.

"In general terms, we were able to identify that there is an important level of supply of both imported and local products", said the official.

He also emphasized that the Government is implementing measures to face the international inflationary crisis since 2022. He said among these measures the exoneration of tariffs for the importation of at least 30 food products and agricultural inputs, which have avoided increases of between 20 % and 40 % in their prices in the market.
