Written by Karla Gutiérrez

The President of the Cámara Salvadoreña de Pequeños y Medianos Productores Agropecuarios (CAMPO), Luis Tremino, affirms that crops, especially güisquil, pipián and ayote have been affected by the heat wave that is affecting the country.

Areas such as Puente Colima, Potrero Grande, among other places in the north of the country are reporting these effects on vegetables.

According to the information reported by CAMPO, this situation is affecting the producers who have already expressed, confirming that the plants are having water stress (water shortage) so they are being Cámara Salvadoreña de Pequeños y Medianos Productores Agropecuarios (CAMPO), damaged, to the point that they are reproducing with deformations.

The President of CAMPO, affirms that despite the treatment being given with fertilizer and other chemicals, crop malformation cannot be avoided, and added that this increases production costs.

According to CAMPO, there could be a deficit of 6.1 million quintals of corn, 591 thousand quintals of beans, 875 thousand quintals of sorghum and 125 thousand quintals of rice, in conclusion, there would be a deficit of more than 7 million quintals.

El Salvador produces 10% of the vegetables consumed in the region while 90% are imported from Guatemala.

CAMPO asks the Government to take precautions in this situation where climate change is generating great effects on vegetables, and another important point to note is that 2023 has been the year with the lowest agricultural production, so it urges institutions to implement strategies to combat these problems otherwise there could be food shortages in late 2024.
