The Minister of Finance, Alejandro Zelaya, signed an agreement with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), for an amount of US$1 million to be used for two projects to be executed by the Comisión Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL) in 190 schools in the country and the Administración Nacional de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (ANDA) in San Diego and Majahual.

The project that CEL will execute through this cooperation agreement consists of the installation of biodigesters in 190 schools throughout the country and to eliminate the use of firewood in the manufacture of food, replacing it with biogas, benefiting 152 thousand students in the coastal zone.

ANDA's project also consists of installing two desalination and water purification plants in the communities of San Diego and El Majahual, in La Libertad. The Majahual plant spends almost US$2 million per year to supply itself with water pipes.

In addition, the minister of Finance, Alejandro Zelaya, said that the water desalination project is a matter of vindication of the rights of these communities, which have suffered from diseases such as kidney failure and gastrointestinal ailments.

CABEI Country Chief Officer, Raúl Castaneda, emphasized that with the signing of this non-reimbursable financial cooperation agreement, the Bank reiterated its commitment to the Central Government.

CABEI Director, Luis Rodríguez, also stated that this project is the result of an initiative in which CABEI seeks to collaborate and complement other projects to meet the needs of different institutions.
