Remittances to El Salvador amounted US$701 million from january to may 2022

Family remittances sent to El Salvador from abroad totaled US$701.8 million in may 2022, accumulating US$3,145.9 million in the first five months of the year, with a growth of 3.9% equivalent to US$117.9 million more than in the same period of the previous year.

Family remittances collected through banking institutions as of may totaled US$1,080.6 million, equivalent to 34.4% of the total with a growth of 1.1% with respect to the same period of the previous year, while other institutions dedicated to the payment of family remittances registered US$1,955.9 million, representing 62.2% of the total, equivalent to a growth of 2.6%.

Family remittances withdrawn over-the-counter as of may accumulated US$2,075.6 million with a share of 66.0% of the total and a growth of 0.3%, while family remittances sent to bank accounts totaled US$960.8 million, equivalent to 30.5% of the total, with a growth of 6.2% compared to the same period of 2021.

The geographic distribution of family remittances collected in banking institutions and remittance companies as of may shows that the western zone accumulated US$530.1 million, registering a growth of 2.8% and a share of 16.9% of the total; the central zone totaled US$1,148.6 million, equivalent to a growth of 2.6%, with a share of 36.5% of the total. The paracentral zone received U$372.5 million, with a growth of 2.3% and a share of 11.8% of the total, while the eastern zone totaled US$982.7 million in remittances, equivalent to a growth of 0.8% and a share of 31.2% of the total.

Between january and may 2022, the three departments with the highest growth rate in family remittances were Cuscatlán with 7.4%, Ahuachapán with 4.7% and Chalatenango with 4.5%.

Of the total family remittances sent to El Salvador, 93.9% were sent from the United States, followed by Canada, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom with 0.9%, 0.4%, 0.3% and 0.1% of the total, respectively.

The receipt of family remittances in the country contributes to the welfare of the population by constituting an important income for 20% of salvadoran households, who use them mainly for consumption expenses that allow them to cover their basic needs.
