Consumer Price Index in El Salvador dropped to 7% in january 2023

The annual variation rate of the Índice de Precios al Consumidor (IPC) in El Salvador in january 2023 was 7%, 3 tenths lower than the previous month, according to the Oficina Nacional De Estadística Y Censos (ONEC).

It highlighted the 1.4% increase in the prices of Food and non-alcoholic beverages, to place its inter-annual rate at 5.6%, which contrasts with the decrease in Housing prices of -0.4%, and an inter-annual variation of 2.1%.

This is the lowest year-on-year figure since last april 2022, when it stood at 6.9%. During the past year, prices in the Central American country climbed to a peak of 7.8% in june.

Currently, inflation accumulates five months of downward trend, since last august, when it stood at 7.7% and now stands at 7%.

In monthly terms, prices increased by 0.34%, an increase of 0.23 percentage points compared to december's monthly rate. However, this increase is well below those recorded in october and november of last year.

By division, alcoholic beverages and tobacco and food and non-alcoholic beverages experienced the largest increases, of 1.36% and 1.04%, respectively.

Accommodation, water, electricity and gas and other fuels and recreation and culture were the only two divisions of the total 12 that make up the index that had a negative performance 0.44% and 0.04%.
