Defensoría del Consumidor activates investigative process after price increase in the basic food basket

Ricardo Salazar, president of the Defensoría del consumidor, after the deployment of inspections in different commercial points of the country, informed that since last week high prices have been found due to speculation in some fruits and vegetables. Therefore, an investigation process has been activated against suppliers engaged in the import, production and marketing of tomatoes, carrots, beets and cucumbers.

So far, 13 suppliers have been investigated, but the deployment of inspection teams continues in the central, western and eastern part of the country, which has led to a decrease in the prices of vegetables such as tomatoes and stable prices for cabbage and potatoes.

Salazar informed: that the first findings of the investigations have been made fourteen requirements to businesses, including importers, transporters and wholesalers of vegetables and fruits, to determine the corresponding responsibilities in the supply chain of products.

In addition, he warned that there is no justification for the increase in prices of basic food products.
