World Bank and Ministry of Finance to support municipal governments with US$200 million

Written by Evelyn Alas

The “Proyecto Desarrollo Económico Local Resiliente” promoted by the Dirección de Obras Municipales (DOM), seeks to boost the country's economy through municipal management and the creation of works that generate the development of municipalities in El Salvador.

The US$200 million project will be executed by the DOM and financed by the World Bank, benefiting 4.5 million salvadorans by strengthening the economic fabric under an approach that manages mechanisms against disasters and emphasizes the fight against poverty, among others.

Within the framework of this project, the Ministry of Finance, through the Dirección General de Contabilidad Gubernamental (DGCG) will be in charge of verifying compliance with financial goals by the country's municipalities.

Likewise, the DGCG will provide technical assistance, supervision and guidance in order to support municipalities in the achievement of the project's objectives, through a virtual training program to be held from march 7 to 21.

The training will be directed to more than 1,500 participants from the different municipalities, among them: financial managers, accountants, budget managers, project managers and tax control managers. The DGCG will also provide support for the municipalities' accounting closings.

In this case, each mayor will be able to present a plan for his community, taking into account investments that include local markets, community centers, which can be used as shelters, tourism infrastructure or disaster resilience. In addition, they can prioritize investments in basic services.
