The U.S. Embassy in El Salvador warned that information circulating on social media claiming that joining the U.S. military is the easiest and fastest way to obtain U.S. citizenship is false. The diplomatic mission stated that these types of posts present incomplete information and can lead people to make incorrect immigration decisions.
According to the embassy, while military service can contribute to certain naturalization processes, this does not mean that any migrant can enlist, nor that the military is a pathway to enter the United States or obtain a visa.
The embassy clarified that those wishing to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces must meet specific requirements established by law. These include having legal permanent residency (Green Card) and being fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing it). These requirements are essential before beginning any process of joining the military.

The embassy also emphasized that naturalization through military service only applies to individuals who meet the eligibility and service requirements established by U.S. law. Therefore, simply enlisting in the military is not enough to automatically obtain citizenship.
The embassy reiterated that military service cannot be used as a means of entering the United States or as an alternative to obtaining an immigrant visa or any other type of visa.

The U.S. Embassy urged the salvadoran population not to be misled by viral posts or information disseminated outside of official channels. It recommended always verifying immigration requirements and consulting only official sources before making decisions related to travel, migration, or naturalization processes.
Finally, it reminded the public that false or incomplete information can create false expectations and jeopardize the immigration plans of those seeking to legally reside in the United States.
