El Salvador continues to take firm steps in its plan to introduce nuclear energy as a key source for its energy development. The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) highlighted the country’s commitment and reiterated the organization’s support in this process. In addition, more than 50 salvadoran professionals have been receiving training in atomic energy, covering technical, legal and compliance aspects.

As part of this progress, an IAEA mission will visit El Salvador in may to evaluate possible locations for the construction of the country’s first nuclear reactor. This study is a key step to ensure that the infrastructure meets international safety and efficiency standards.
The head of the Dirección General de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas (DGEHM), Daniel Álvarez, noted that the first nuclear plant is expected to be operational in approximately seven years. To this end, the government also seeks to train hundreds of salvadoran professionals who will be able to handle this technology safely and effectively.

El Salvador’s commitment to nuclear energy has been recognized by international organizations. Currently, the country joins a small group of Latin American nations with projects in this area, such as Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia and Peru, consolidating its leadership in the Central American region.

In addition, the recent Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation signed with the United States strengthens the ties of collaboration in the development of peaceful nuclear energy. This agreement will allow El Salvador to access key knowledge and resources for the success of its ambitious energy project.
