The Instituto Salvadoreño del Café (ISC) together with the Ministry of Economy, in collaboration with the International Trade Center, have launched a pilot test of the “Deforestation Free Trade Portal” initiative. The main objective of this digital tool is to support salvadoran exporters and producers in complying with the strict requirements of the European Regulation on Deforestation and Forest Degradation Free Products.
The platform will allow actors in the coffee sector to efficiently collect, harmonize and manage the information needed to demonstrate that their production does not contribute to deforestation. This is key to maintaining access to European markets, which have increased their regulations in search of sustainable and environmentally friendly products.
The Instituto Salvadoreño del Café and its strategic allies highlight the importance of this tool in improving the competitiveness of Salvadoran coffee in the international market. They also emphasize that the initiative not only benefits large exporters, but also small producers, who will be able to ensure the sustainability of their crops and compliance with international regulations.
The pilot test of the portal represents a significant step towards the modernization of the coffee trade in El Salvador and the country’s commitment to environmental sustainability. It is hoped that, once fully implemented, this tool will become a model for other productive sectors that face similar challenges in their exports.
