The Legislative Assembly approved a new extension of the state of emergency, a measure that will remain in effect from may 31 to june 29, 2026, as part of the government’s security strategies to combat criminal organizations in the country.
The extension was approved by a vote of 57 in favor and marks the 51st extension since the regime took effect in march 2022.
According to authorities, the continuation of this measure aims to maintain actions against gangs and preserve the climate of security that has been established in various regions of the country over the past few years.
According to data presented during the plenary session, since the implementation of the state of emergency, El Salvador has accumulated 1,111 days with zero homicides, 123 of which occurred in 2026.

Likewise, authorities report that more than 92,000 gang members have been arrested since the measure began, which is part of the security plan promoted by the government of President Nayib Bukele.
During the legislative debate, Caleb Navarro, a representative from the Nuevas Ideas party, stated that the country has undergone a transformation in terms of security compared to previous years, when many communities were plagued by violence and controlled by criminal groups.
The legislator noted that El Salvador currently has one of the lowest homicide rates in the region, at 1.3 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

He also noted that the extension responds to the need to maintain the stability and security achieved throughout the country.
With this new extension, the state of emergency will remain in effect for another month, while authorities continue operations and actions aimed at combating criminal organizations and protecting the salvadoran population.
