Considering the nationwide orange alert issued due to Tropical Storm Cristina, the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) is sharing recommendations to protect animals, reminding producers that they should not risk their safety or that of their families.
Poultry producers should secure and protect their facilities with plastic curtains to prevent respiratory illnesses. Likewise, if they are backyard birds, it is best to keep them in safe places.
Providing vitamins and electrolytes is essential to reduce stress in these animals.
The MAG recommends that livestock farmers move their animals to a height of more than 15 meters above the usual rainwater runoff level during the rainy season, especially in coastal areas and near river mouths with high flow.

Furthermore, producers should ensure the availability of feed for at least 10 days and protect it from moisture, especially hay and concentrated feed.
Using hay or other bedding material in animal housing sheds is another technical tip from the MAGin addition to monitoring and controlling animal and insect pests.
Beekeepers are advised to identify any risks of flooding or landslides in the apiary area; if there is a risk, it is best to move the hives to another location.

It is advisable to raise the hives 40 or 50 cm above ground, reduce the entrance so that only 1/3 is open, and ensure that there is only one entrance to maintain the internal temperature of the hive.
If there are hives with damaged lids, it is best to place a plastic sheet under the lid and position the hives with a slight incline towards the entrance, so that water can drain out in case of leakage.
Producers should stay informed by following the information provided by specialists from the Sistema Nacional de Protección Civil de El Salvador.
