The U.S. Embassy in El Salvador released information to clarify some of the main myths related to irregular entry into U.S. territory. The diplomatic mission warned that empty promises, rumors, and incomplete information can create false expectations among those considering migrating through unauthorized channels.
One of the points highlighted is the belief that crossing the border irregularly allows one to subsequently enter the United States legally. The Embassy stated that this is not the case and that people who enter without authorization may face immigration proceedings, deportation, fines, and other legal consequences.
It also refuted the idea that staying in the United States for 12 months without documentation automatically grants residency. According to the information released, the length of an unauthorized stay does not guarantee legal immigration status and may result in deportation and restrictions on returning to the country.
Another myth addressed relates to traveling with minors. The Embassy noted that bringing children or adolescents does not guarantee entry into the United States or prevent deportation proceedings. It also warned of the risks that an irregular migration journey can pose to minors.
The U.S. Embassy also addressed the so-called “coyotes”—people who offer to facilitate border crossings in exchange for large sums of money. The Embassy warned that paying for these services does not guarantee entry into the United States and that those who attempt to enter illegally may be detained and subsequently returned to their home countries.
Another message is directed at those who believe that not having a criminal record allows them to enter the country without authorized immigration status. The Embassy clarified that the absence of a criminal record does not, in and of itself, constitute authorization to enter or remain in the United States.
The information aims to prevent people from making immigration decisions based on rumors or promises made by third parties. The Embassy reiterated that immigration conditions should be verified through official sources and that the processes for entering the United States are subject to the laws and procedures established by that country.
With this message, the U.S. diplomatic mission seeks to reinforce information about the risks and consequences associated with irregular entry and to warn that none of the situations mentioned guarantees entry, stay, or immigration regularization in the United States.
