
Having multiple debts doesn’t mean they all have to be paid off in the same way. Before choosing a method, it’s helpful to know how much you owe, the interest rates, the minimum payments, and the due dates.
One well-known alternative is the snowball method. This involves ordering debts from smallest to largest balance and concentrating any additional money on the smallest debt, while maintaining the minimum payments on the others. Once a debt is paid off, the amount previously allocated to it is added to the payment of the next largest debt. Its main advantage is that it allows you to see progress quickly, although it can result in higher interest costs than other strategies.
Another option is the avalanche method, also known as the highest interest rate method. In this case, the priority is the debt with the highest interest rate. After paying it off, the available money is directed toward the next highest interest rate debt. This strategy can reduce the total cost of interest, although initial progress may be less noticeable when the priority debt is large.

Additional payments can also be made when the budget allows. Regularly allocating extra funds accelerates the reduction of the outstanding balance and can shorten the repayment period. Extra income can also be used to reduce debt, always reviewing the contract terms.
Consolidation combines several obligations into one, usually through a new loan. It can simplify payments, but it doesn’t eliminate the debt and should be evaluated considering the interest rate, fees, term, and total cost. A lower rate doesn’t always mean paying less if the term is significantly extended.

When someone faces difficulties making payments, they can also contact their creditors to explore payment alternatives or seek financial guidance. The decision should be based on their actual ability to pay and not solely on reducing the monthly payment.
The goal is to have a sustainable plan, avoid late payments, and maintain a budget to meet obligations without neglecting basic needs.
