Sustainable Finance for El Salvador

Written by Leydin Sorto

Today, humanity still faces many challenges to achieve true wellbeing for all, such as climate change, gender gaps, social and governance dynamics.

Sustainable finance translates into finding solutions to these challenges. Therefore, Bancoagrícola, being the bank of Salvadorans, promotes sustainable development for the well-being of all, maintaining a balance between economic, social and environmental aspects in its business, investment and project decisions.

One of the action fronts in which it can further its purpose and measure its results aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals is to promote financial inclusion.

The more people have access to our country's financial system, the closer we will be to the goal of achieving development and stability, guaranteeing the well-being and productivity of families. Therefore, Bancoagrícola has a strong commitment to financial inclusion, developing a series of spaces to do business with purpose, and strengthen the productive fabric, with emphasis on SMEs headed by women.

"As Bancoagrícola we promote sustainable development, through a series of programs that directly and positively impact the productive sectors, mainly SMEs led by women, as they foster well-being for their families and allow us to generate more stable and fair communities", said Emperatriz Mayorga, Bancoagrícola's Sustainability manager.

Businesses with purpose is Bancoagrícola's great bet at present, which has allowed it to place, until august 2023, more than $927 million in agribusiness, exports, trade and manufacturing, SMEs and sustainable communities.

"We are a bank that believes in the country and the potential of its people, which is why we generate more opportunities for the productive sectors, large and small, to access financing, with a view to the future; supporting and promoting the economic empowerment of women with the offer of financial and non-financial products, such as Crédito Mujer Futuro and Elévate, a financial training program for SMEs", said Tito Barrera, SME manager of Bancoagrícola.

At the end of august, placement of Crédito Mujer Futuro amounted to $4.5 million, and in consumer loans for women, more than $227 million have been placed.

In addition, under the Ella ES Líder platform, Bancoagrícola has been able to accompany more than 330 salvadoran women, giving them the opportunity to continue dreaming and acting, empowering their entrepreneurial strength, through a comprehensive value proposition for their needs under the following pillars: financial services, knowledge and recognition, and digital transformation.

"In FUNDEMAS we believe in the best version of El Salvador, and we are pleased to have allies like Bancoagrícola that share this purpose, because thanks to this we work together to achieve the sustainable development of our country, covering social, economic and environmental aspects", said Haydée de Trigueros, executive director of FUNDEMAS.

Bancoagrícola will present its commitment to a country with a sustainable approach at the Panel: Sustainable Finance, as part of the 11th edition of Sustainability and CSR Week organized by FUNDEMAS, which will take place from october 10 to 12 of this year.

"Our commitment is to create an open space to share ideas, learn about and debate innovative approaches and perspectives on sustainability. The financial sector is key to ensuring the productivity and well-being of society, now and in the future", said the executive director of FUNDEMAS.

This is the largest meeting point on sustainability in El Salvador, since each year, brings together more than 2,500 attendees representing large, medium and small businesses, international cooperation, local government, OSCs and universities, among others.
