El Salvador's Ministry of Economy has announced the beginning of talks to establish a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the People's Republic of China.

The minister of Economy, María Luisa Hayem, together with the representative of International Trade and Vice Minister of Commerce of China, Wang Shouwen, made the announcement.

Hayem highlighted the commitment of both nations to strengthen their economic relations and create investment and cooperation opportunities.

"This announcement demonstrates the firm commitment of both nations to deepen their economic relations and enhance investment opportunities, as well as mutual cooperation", said minister Maria Luisa Hayem.

Negotiations for the FTA are expected to be swift, and the agreement is expected to include innovative provisions in areas such as intellectual property, services and investment, as well as economic cooperation and support for small and medium-sized enterprises.

"In recent years, bilateral relations have been developing in an accelerated and comprehensive manner, with emphasis on many economic and trade achievements", said China's International Trade Representative and Vice Minister of Commerce.

Both countries will establish a working table to prepare the General Framework for Negotiations, which will include general principles, modalities, and a road map. This initiative is part of the Government's efforts to strengthen the national economy and relations with allied countries through foreign trade.
