That food in El Salvador is becoming more expensive by leaps and bounds is a fact: it is enough to compare the price of the basic food basket at the beginning of 2021 US$199.24 with the last available data, that of January 2024 US$256.81, according to data from the Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (Onec).

In view of these increases, the president of the Defensoría del Consumidor, Ricardo Salazar, has called on the private sector to adopt commercial practices that respect the rights and interests of consumers, to eradicate illegal, unethical, discriminatory, or deceptive practices, to comply with the law and to contribute to a better functioning and transparency of the agricultural inputs market.
