CENDEPESCA will apply fines of up to US$18,250 to those who violate the shrimp veda

The Centro de Desarrollo de la Pesca y la Acuicultura (CENDEPESCA) will impose fines of up to 50 minimum wages to those responsible for industrial boats that violate the shrimp veda.

It also confirmed that for artisanal fishermen who violate the prohibition to extract this marine resource, the sanction to be applied will be 20 minimum monthly salaries corresponding to the industry.

The minimum wage for the industrial sector is US$365 per month, so in the case of industrial vessels the fine will be up to US$18,250 and for artisanal fishermen the maximum sanction is US$7,300.

To date, the authorities of CENDEPESCA and the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) have only reported one person who was fined for disrespecting the temporary suspension of extracting marine shrimp.

The veda came into effect on may 1st and will remain in effect until the 31st of this month. During this period, the extraction of white shrimp, also known as blue and striped shrimp, three species of shrimp, known as "chacalín" or "titi", one species of red shrimp and one species of brown shrimp is prohibited.

In order to guarantee the effective enforcement of the ban, CENDEPESCA teams have been deployed to different points of the salvadoran coast, as well as to some supply centers where the product is distributed by wholesalers.

The population is reminded that complaints about the extraction and illegal trade of this resource can be made at the CENDEPESCA offices in Santa Tecla, Acajutla, Izalco, Los Cóbanos, La Libertad, San Luis La Herradura, Ilopango, Santa Cruz Porrillo, Puerto El Triunfo and La Unión.
