Financial and telecommunications sectors among the most intervened by the Defensoría del Consumidor

Ricardo Salazar, head of the Defensoría del Consumidor released a report on the achievements of the institution in the last 4 years, where he highlighted that 365,095 people have benefited with positive results in their cases.

These statements were made within the framework of the 18th anniversary of the creation of this regulatory body, where it was also mentioned that a total of US$5 million 140,417 in fines have been imposed on more than 1,000 suppliers, among which the financial, telecommunications, commercial, food and essential products sectors that have violated the Consumer Protection Law (LPC) stand out.

Another aspect to highlight was that new regulations have been created that have resulted in 137 infractions in financial matters for violations of the LPC, the Law of the Credit Card System, the Law Against Usury and the Law for the Regulation of Information Services on the Credit History of Individuals.

"We generate a lot of information that we want to be useful for our population. We have managed to promote, create and update seven important information portals, such as the one related to credit cards, funeral homes and prices", said Salazar in the conference.

The head of the institution also emphasized that now there is greater credibility in the Defensoría and a total of 93% of the cases have been closed in favor of consumers. "We have carried out more than 194 thousand verifications, nationwide, with a central objective: to avoid abuses against our population. In all matters related to unjustified price increases and speculation that can be generated in the market", said Salazar.
